The third chapter of the Red Queen examines the Flipped Classroom pedagogical model with Raúl Santiago, maximum representative of this pedagogy in Spain.
The Flipped Classroom is a comprehensive approach that combines direct instruction with constructivist methods, increased commitment and involvement of students with the course content, thus improving their conceptual understanding. Applied successfully, it supports all phases of a learning cycle (Bloom Taxonomy).
Jonathan BergmannandAaron Sams, two chemistry teachers at Woodland Park High School in Woodland Park Colorado, coined the term “Flipped Classroom”. Bergmann and Sams realized that students often missed some classes for specific reasons (illness, for example). To help these students, they encouraged video recording and distribution but also realized that this same model allows the teacher to focus more attention on the individual learning needs of each student.
When teachers design and publish an online experience,class time is freed up to facilitate students’ participation in active learning through questions, discussions and applied activities that encourage exploration, articulation and application of ideas.

Raúl Santiago, Doctor in Educational Sciences, professor at the University of La Rioja, director of the master’s degree in Methodologies and Emerging Technologies Applied to Education, is the maximum representative of this pedagogy in Spain. Santiago explains in La Reina Roja the benefits of this system “This is the best way to learn, it is what is going to produce a permanent, lasting, quality learning”. Santiago also points out that a paradigm shift is necessary: “A cultural change that doesn’t only affect to the educational system in general but students, families, learning contents, assessment and the ordinary school, the Secondary School and High School”.
